"Stop buying swan kitsch!" I say to myself, but then I come across another good one, and my resolve is gone. And then there is another one-they are everywhere and I just can't help myself. I am wondering why I am suddenly so drawn to swan kitsch over the kitten kitsch or swan's close cousin, the country goose, kitsch? It's interesting to consider where our tastes come from, how they form and evolve. Currently there is a big whale fad going on, and for whatever reason, it hasn't drawn me in, nor has the deer obsession. Is it where we grow up, or a fairy-tale we were read as a child, or was it Natalie Portman's recent swan portrayal that helped the swan's cause, or is it simply its inherently beautiful shape? The psychology of taste would be a fascinating study.
If you too are drawn to swans, come to our sale. If you aren't drawn to swans, come to our sale-we will have many taste neuroses to choose from, for your buying pleasure.
these two would be perfectly paired with salt

Rather appropriate that just after my birthday I found these two fine prints at a flea market in France. According to, the less-than-reliable Google translate, the first reads "The Levels of the Old Woman". Nice. I am sure our resident German Window Darling can straighten things out, I'm sure it reads "The Beauty of the Naturally Aging Woman". Regardless of what it says about me and the other half (see below) these prints exhibit the attributes that always seem to catch my eye, well chosen colors and romantic images. I also love the old black frames and simple hardware for hanging.

"Crate paper?...is that what you just called it?" I asked Angela many, many years ago, as we were driving to buy some "crepe paper" for a project. "Yes?!"-she answered, and then I had my moment. "I'm quite sure it's crepe paper". "No-it's crate paper" she replied. This was so long ago, we didn't even have smart phones, where we could have quickly googled the answer, yet I remember it quite clearly.... as it turns out(obviously!), I was right. I was, for once, able to "teach" Angela something. I only bring this up because today(yesterday, March 25th) is the birthday of my greatest teacher of all that makes my world more rich and beautiful and interesting. Happy Birthday Window Darling Angela. She has taught me so much, over the many years of our friendship, and how, even while living so far away in Luxembourg, these things influence and enhance my life everyday.
....from the books I read, to the pasta I buy (de cecco), to the music I listen to, to creating an awareness of aspects of graphic design, like kerning and subtleties of various fonts, to putting milk in my tea, to introducing me to Louise Bourgeois, to cultivating in me the same love(obsession) for all things paper.... crate, crepe and otherwise. So here's to Angela, and to crepe paper, the most festive paper of all.
Happy Birthday my dear far away friend.

Morning visits to Goodwill have become part of my weekday routine. Here are some of the white finds from last week's hunting and gathering.
When I first met these four ladies at the Ballard Goodwill, they were clad in giant burgundy calico-print lamp shades. I stripped them then and there (I just had to), and left the shades for someone else to buy. Once the simple curves and color were exposed, they were quite lovely. They stand 24" tall and can be bought as a set of four or as pairs.
